5 Day Jordan Extension - starting at $1099: Jerash, Petra, Mt. Nebo

Why extend your Holy Land Tour to Jordan?

First of all, Jordan is more than 50% of the land mass of the Land of Israel during the reign of King Solomon. Second, the country is fascinating (wait till you see Jerash and Petra)! Third, you are welcomed graciously and treated wonderfully by the Jordanians. This tour fits best with our weekly Israel tour with the last hotel night in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. Since this extension is offered weekly there are usually less than 10 passengers in a mini-bus or van - which is very pleasant compared to being crammed in a full bus. Often the tour is private.

Day 1 - transfer from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv to Israel and Jordan border. Cross border and drive to Jerash, the best-preserved city of Roman times outside Rome: visit theaters, temples, churches and colonnaded streets. Continue to Ajloun to tour the Saracen Castle. Dinner and overnight Amman.

Day 2 - drive south on the King's Highway to Petra; visiting Madaba a Moabite city, in the Exodus account at Numbers 21:30 and Joshua 13:9.

The present-day city is known for the many mosaics found in the remains of floors of private homes and public buildings. Madaba is the site of the famed Mosaic Map. It is an index map of the region, dating from the sixth century, preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Basilica of St. George. It is the earliest remaining representation of Jerusalem. The map provides important details of 6th century landmarks. This map is one key in developing scholarly knowledge about the physical layout of Jerusalem after the year 70. Continue to Mt. Nebo - the burial site of Moses, then drive through the magnificent scenery of Wadi Mujib to Kerak to visit the Crusader Castle. Dinner and overnight Petra.

Day 3 - a full day to visit Petra, this city that was carved into the rose-red Sharah Mountains by the Nabateans and lost to civilization until re-discovered by the Swiss explorer Burkhardt. Walk through the Siq, a narrow and winding fissure between the cliffs, to reach the: Treasury, Roman Theater, Courts, Temple of the Winged Lion and other monuments. You may wish to climb up to the Monastery. Dinner and overnight Petra.

Day 4 - visit the Wadi Rum Desert (with a short ride in a 4x4 vehicle) and its awesome moon-like landscape, where the film "Lawrence of Araba" was shot. If time permits a short visit to Aqaba, Jordan’s only sea port city. Return to Amman on the Desert Highway (stop en route for optional lunch), dinner and overnight in Amman, (or cross into Israel at Aqaba for short flight to Tel Aviv - the 2 transfers and flight are not included in price, approx. $150).

Day 5 - Transfer to Queen Alia International Airport for departure flight.
